My personal blog is slowly generating positive responses. I got many queries in my mailbox on how to make money online.

Well, firstly, I wish I could tell you a simple answer. Secondly, I could be writing a book about ‘How to Make Money Online’ but still it will not cover everything there are in the internet. Thirdly, I, with my 3 months of experiences in internet entrepreneurship, am not the authority to elaborate about this matter and I for the record, have never made any claim even about making my first dollar or so, to qualify as one.

So how can I help you? If you are still interested to hear me out, then read on.

From my recent readings about online business, from many books authored by the internet marketing gurus and from the resources in the internet itself, I have compiled a list of business models that are widely used for making money online. But since the list is long and for presentation reasons, they are purposely being over simplified in their description.

The few first entries are of selected business models that are the easiest and most convenient for one dedicated individual to execute from home. All you need are a PC or laptop (or a Mac), a good internet connection, a telephone, some means to make online payment and a printer to print any ebooks or instructions so you do not strain your eyes staring at the monitor screen too long. Respective to Malaysians, a streamyx 512 kb/s connection, a Maybank2u account and a Public Bank debit card are a minimum recommendation.

This list is not in chronological order nor according to any specific ranking.

1. Selling physical products or services the old way but marketing on the internet

This would be the simplest way to utilized the internet. This business model is very basic and as conventional as it get. You would still need to manage your stocks and storage, but are taking a big leap by advertising to a large masses.

Suggested tools; Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, emails, and free blogging platforms such as Blogspot, Wordpress and etc. Business transaction can be done through online money transfer and mailing the product to the prospective customer.

Pros : Easy management, comfortable to do as it’s usually culturally related, no rental for shoplot or other physical advertisement, suitable for part time basis, small capital.

Cons: Small enterprise scale, require frontal investment, limited by production capacity or stocks at hand, stocks are subject to damage, sales sometimes is seasonal, usually limited to local area, require constant management and not in anyway automated.

Business example; selling variety of Tudungs or other women’s apparels, selling bake per order Hari Raya cookies and freelancing for 3D perspective drawings works. See here.

2. Selling physical products or services by others and marketing on the internet.

A person doing this kind of online business is called a dropshipper. What you do is register with a dropshipping company, sometimes for free and sometimes for a small earnest fee which is refundable after making a set amount of sales. You make money by marking up your selling price base on dropshipping company price. Type of products for sale depend on the dropshipping company you choose and usually from a varieties of household goods, electronics, machineries and equipments. See dropshipping company here.

You’ll need to browse through their inventory and select what kind of goods you want to sell. Marketing is usually done through storefront interface type of websites, that require shopping cart system to receive online payment from buyer’s credit cards. A dropshipper accept payments directly to his/her account and then after deducting his/her profits, transfers the remaining balance to the dropshipping company. The dropshipping company then mails or couriers the goods to the buyer throughout the world in an unmarked package. A dropshipper always keep his dropshipping company a secret to his/her buyer and other dropshipper in the market.

Pros : Business is carried out online, no need to hold stocks, stocks is limited to dropshipping company’s huge inventory, damage and warranty borne by dropshipping company, profits (price mark-up) is decided by you, a huge selection of goods to sell, product and delivery is outsourced, market limit is the world itself.

Cons : Constant attention is required to check for incoming orders, requires a level of trust from buyers to make a purchase, heavy competition by other dropshippers, sales is derived from strong branding that requires in depth market knowledge,  sales sometimes is seasonal, sometimes a company is unaware it has become a dropsshipping tools for a certain dropshipper (really!).

This argument however was laid to rest after listening to the recorded conversation between two old timers of internet entrepreneurship in Malaysia, Zamri Nanyan and Patric Chan, respectively a mentee and a mentor.

This recorded conversation in MP3 format basically is very informative and in length point out the do’s and don’ts when starting online business. I am personally grateful to Patric Chan for sharing his wealth of experiences in his field of authority. (The download link is closed but you can purchase the whole product here)

Just to give a bit of background, I was starting afresh doing full time in online business while my friend was doing full time in bakery and using the internet as his marketing medium.

The funny thing is I never heard Patric Chan literally voicing out his experiences before, in contrast to my friend that has been following him for a long time now, and even has bought one of his premium e-book package which is very expensive.

Well, according to Patric, internet entrepreneurship or having online business is not the same as making money online. He stressed out on the importance of building a solid foundation of assets instead of short term earning. And according to him, a lot of Malaysia internet marketers made common mistakes by not looking after the long term aspects of their business but rather focusing for new products while its still hot, he put simply as making money online.

In short,  the long term aspect will accumulate in momentum over time, in contrast to  the short term one that deteriorates. However, as Patric has suggested, any newcomer should start with respective 30:70 % ratio as further explained by the recording.

OK. So far so good.

But then as the conversation goes on, I was hit by a slap to the face. And I paused for a moment to the length it takes to really establish yourself as a successful internet entrepreneur, if you are a beginner.

To qualify one as full time internet entrepreneur, it is compulsory to have the following criteria;

1. Business Sistemization

- something about having business module that can be duplicated and expanded.

2. Predictable Income

- something about having a fixed or minimum amount of income per month

3. Ability to Create Instant Income

- very much the same meaning, an ability to utilize existing mechanism for short term earning.

To be frank, I had non of these, yet. Maybe a portion of no.1 as I was concentrating all my effort to long term goals due to reason stated in my previous post. I need to do my other 70% now.

Well Mr. Patric Chan sir, I got time to kill and I shall follow your advice to the letter.

Man, I got a long way to go.  PPC anyone?

Mean while, my scooter is behaving erratically since few days ago, and guess what? It transforms into one of the Autobot.

Ha ha. Come one now, I know you want one, or at least having a pet transformer like that cute humping foul mouth little RC monster truck Decepticon.

Joke asides, out of curiosity I photoshoped one of the superbike Autobot into my Yamaha Nouvo S scooter and as you can see, the result is not too bad. Though I doubt it will last 10 seconds in actual battle with any of the Decepticons for having that many plastic parts. The insurance company probably would not cover the damages anyway.

Hey, I haven’t thought about what to call it yet. Any idea?

I was having the time of my life before embracing the concept of internet entrepreneurship. To be more precise, that moment was some when right after I quit my last job and just hours before I uploaded this blog not too many days ago.

You see, right before quitting, I managed to settle everything that is loan related and still got myself a chunk of savings for my future plans . All loans are settled, except for a small balance of my university study loan, ..not such a big deal.

Basically I’m now free of debt and free of liability. To some of you that never had such an experience, I tell you now that it was a kind of once in a lifetime moment, worthy of beheading a goat sacrifice (..or not) and self rejuvenating, and it felt like reaching a milestone of accomplishment.

For once in my life, since I’m no longer a young boy, I really have NOTHING to worry about. In a sudden, I felt lighter and younger. Although I’m in no position to arm myself with luxurious car or other fancy things, I was enjoying every moment of my life, to the smallest details. I’m glad I got separated from the masses.

So this is my plan and I feel good at this. I got the whole time in the world and I can choose to do what I like most.

I am simply going to rush myself at full speed in everything about internet entrepreneurship for the next 3-6 months twenty four seven. Period.

When I used the word ‘rush’, it is not about ‘jump now think later’ kind of attitude. Because I have really thought about this through and through. I’ve done my research and am comfortable with a specific business plan.

I fully understood that the Internet is rampant with excessive claims of how much money can be made as an internet entrepreneur and that you can be making tens of thousands of Dollar by next month. Out of all this rush, I’m also moving ahead cautiously with one thought in mind, that most ‘instant’ success are months or years in the making, in particular to the online business.

Remember, my case is exclusive. I’m taking a very low risk doing online business, the overhead is low but the return can be very high. In spite of these advantages, however, an online business is the same like any other business and needs to be carefully studied before starting, to ascertain how viable the business idea is.

As long as I kept my expenses low and under budget, I’m on the safe spot. Starting an online business requires very low start up cost, at least for purchasing a good hosting service and a domain registration. Actually you can get them for free if you know where to look. But I would advice to buy them if you want to treat this as a serious business. A hosting service is equivalent to your storage hard disk in the internet and a domain is your online business address like mine is www.AhmadFahmiIsmail.com. Both of these can be obtained for less than a hundred Ringgit nowadays.

P/S: To be frank, the time that I have is as good as my saving account or before something else went awfully wrong. So I have to play this right.

Definition of Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is a person who operates a new enterprise or venture and assumes some accountability for the inherent risks. The term is a loanword from French and was first defined by the Irish economist Richard Cantillon. A female entrepreneur is sometimes known as an entrepreneuse.

A study was carried out on a group of entrepreneurs to rate a list of given attributes according to their importance for success.

The 7 following qualities were most highly ranked by the participants of that study;

1. Perseverance

2. The desire and willingness to take initiative

3. Competitiveness

4. Self-reliance

5. A strong need to achieve

6. Self-confidence

7. Good physical health

Although I believe this study was done for offline type of entrepreneurship, I would suggest the list is still very much relevant but with due consideration to the absence of face to face human interaction.

The World Wide Web is almost limitless in term of directions. No matter where we turn to, we will be spoilt with too many choices and varieties that tend to (mis)lead us nowhere.

In respect of making money online, there are just simply too many ways, digital or physical, conventional or inventive, from blogging to marketing, that the process of making the actual selection itself is untimely, time consuming, confusing, distracting and demotivating.

The last 3 months I spent on research and finally making the selection was just taking too much time to others standard. But personally I have to make sure that I’m doing the right thing and starting off with the right mindset would really help in seeing the way forward clearly.

Any seasoned internet entrepreneurs will advice on narrowing down the scope to really suits one’s passion and interest, and importantly, comfortably enough for one’s level of knowledge to deliver.

But don’t worry, there are shortcuts. It’s possible to start off with minimal or no WEB knowledge at all. Setting up a blog or website is fairly easy nowadays. For those who are just too lazy or lacking the required knowledge in doing things on their own, website building works can be contracted or tendered out to many of the available freelancers out there. Of course they do not come free and an amount of fee is applicable subject to the complexity of work at hand.

Personally and maybe from the way I was previously trained, I always preferred to do things the hard way. Since I was still a project manager, I would sometimes drove the backpusher tractor or the loading truck myself to get the job done. It is sometimes necessary to dirty our hands with the labor works, firstly to get the job done as timely and correctly to set the standard,  and secondly, to put ourselves in total control over any situation in time of crises.

All things beside, maybe I should thank RidzuanRichie for unintentionally made me act quicker than I would.

Originally, I though this was a bad idea.

But so was quitting my job as a project manager about 1/2 year ago, while making good income and being a boss for a small construction company  and to a troop of construction workers.

Anyway, that was then. The going gets tough, and the tough gets going. They say it was about the heat of recent global economic recession. Everybody was affected. Myself included.

The story is what now? I’m here in my living room and you are reading this.

Did I mentioned I’m supposed to be in Abu Dhabi 3 months ago, now? Starting a new job as Resident Landscape Architect in one of the mega projects, in the most rapidly developed country in the world, the United Arab Emirates.

Anyhow, all of this started when a friend introduced me to the online world not too long ago. Not to the ‘online world’ per se. The internet was not in anyway new to me, very much like everybody knew about e-mail, Myspace, YM or Facebook these days. But it was about the other side of the internet. The one about working at home and making money on the World Wide Web.

Really?

I spent the last 3 months researching all about making money online. By now terms such as Clickbank, affiliate, e-book, SEO, Adwords, Adsense and etc are not so unfamiliar to me. Locally there are internet entrepreneurs who are as young as in early twenties claiming success of making a pot load of money and becoming instant gurus.

Well anyway, this is not about them. Always a hard to impress and skeptical person, I’m here to take the journey myself. Whether I will make it to the end or not, the question does not matter anymore. This is just either do or die, for I am already to lazy to leave the comfort of my living room to join the old rat race once again.
